Historical Background

 

Fort Portal College Of Health Sciences (FPCOHES) is a public Tertiary institute found in Fort Portal Municipality Kabarole District. Fort Portal College of Health Sciences  was founded in 1965 at the king’s palace before being transferred to the current location along Mugurusi Road plot 9 adjacent to fort Portal regional referral hospital 1969 as a departmental training institution with a mandate to train medical assistants by then, under auspices of Uganda Ministry of health. It was by  then being  called fort portal school of medical assistants(MATS). With the review of the medical assistants’ curriculum in 1984, the name change to fort Portal school of clinical officers. Today the school has made tremendous developmental steps in terms of student enrollment, infrastructure, staffing and courses offered. Currently, the school has transitioned to be called Fort Portal College of Health Sciences. The college is strategically located adjacent to Fort Portal regional referral hospital where students learn clinical/practical skills from. Our students are also placed to rural health facilitates around Rwenzori region, pharmaceutical industries in central region and Lacor Hospital in Northern Uganda.
